Russ Algar received B.Sc. (2005), M.Sc. (2006), and Ph.D. (2010) degrees in chemistry from the University of Toronto, Canada. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Bio/Molecular Science and Engineering, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC, USA, from 2010 to 2012. He is currently a Professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. His research focuses on the applications of luminescent materials for bioanalysis and imaging. Areas of particular interest include the development of nanoparticle assemblies, energy transfer-based sensors, nanoparticle-biomolecule interfaces, and smartphone-based devices for molecular diagnostics. Dr. Algar’s research has been recognized with a Sloan Fellowship (2017), the McBryde Medal from the Canadian Society for Chemistry (2022), and the PerkinElmer Analytical Sciences and Spectroscopy Award (2023), among several other awards and fellowships.
